PS3: The Things You Need! Exclusive Edition

It has come to that time of the year that us gamers get a bit of a break and someone else buys the games we have missed over the past year for us. Seeing as how this year was one of the biggest since the launch of the PlayStation 3, I am writing a gift guide for those of you trying to remember what you missed over the past year, or for anyone that has a PlayStation 3 owner on their list of people to buy gifts for.

PlayStation 3 Exclusives:

I'm going to start this list of in the strongest way possible, and by strongest way possible I of course mean the one game that absolutely every PlayStation 3 owner should have, and that is Uncharted 2. Uncharted 2 should be the first thing on your list if you are a PlayStation 3 owner and don't already have it. The graphics are mind-blowing, gameplay is top-notch, and the online multiplayer rivals anything else on the system. This really is an all around great game and if you don't have it, you should.

Next up is a personal favorite of mine from earlier in the year and that is inFAMOUS. Around the beginning of the summer there were 3 open world games to come out around the same time those being, inFAMOUS, Red Faction: Guerilla, and Prototype. inFAMOUS, was definitely my favorite. The day it was released I went to my local retailer, bought the game, and then 15 hours later I was watching the ending credits and starting my second character, it's that good. If you are a fan of open world third person shooters, this is definitely a game for you.

Next up, for the murderous shooter in everyone I present to you Killzone 2. This game is being slightly overlooked due to its release in the first few months of 2009 but it is still very good and a very competent shooter. It has some of the best graphics on the system, a decent single player campaign, and very addictive online multiplayer. All-in-all it's a very good game.

Next up is my favorite game for the kid in everyone. Ratchet and Clank Future: A Crack In Time. With spot on gameplay, competent shooting, and humor so corny you can't help but laugh/cringe at the same time, this game is innocent and childish enough for any kid, but difficult enough for any adult. It's like that Pixar movie you took your siblings to because "they wanted to go" but in all actuality, you really wanted to see. All joking aside though, this is a very good game and all age groups will get some enjoyment out of it.

Finally we are on to one of the most difficult yet rewarding games I have ever played and completely fallen in love with, and that is Demon's Souls. This game is so unforgiving I have argued that it should probably come with an extra controller for those of us out there that have a tendency to "drop" controllers with extreme force. In all seriousness though, this game is nothing like you have played in years, I can almost guarantee it. When was the last time you died in a game, and every bit of progress you made was erased? It's probably been a while, unless you have been playing games that don't have an auto-save feature. Don't let the difficulty deter you from playing this though. Just the online portion of this game is worth the price tag. I am absolutely positive it will have a lasting impression upon anyone that has played it and that you have never experienced the dread of having another playing invade your game with the sole purpose of killing you in cold blood for no other reason but to gain their life back....Or just to be a dick, either way, this game is absolutely phenomenal, and is definitely in my top 3 games of this year, if you already have Uncharted 2, this should absolutely be your next purchase, or the purchase for whoever is buying your games for Christmas.

There they are, not a huge shock that Modern Warfare 2 is on top, but look at all the Wii crap right below it. With the slight exception of Mario Kart, the rest of the Wii games on there are pretty much useless. Yeah yeah, a ton of people like Wii Sports Resort or whatever, but Wii Play and Wii Fit are both in the top 5, (we are talking 2 to 3 year old games here). With so many other good games out there, (real) gamers look at this list and cringe a little bit, (but what can you do)? I know I bought every game that I wanted in November, and a few surprised me when they were released. In the end its all numbers; to be frank, numbers like this are somewhat expected. Plus, around the holidays the NPD numbers get especially muddled due to parents and grandparents buying their kids games that they have no idea about themselves. Not everyone is as educated in gaming as the hardcore audience, and can't be expected to know what to buy.

Uncharted 2 "The Best"....(Around)

So anyone that pays attention to g4 already knows this but Adam Sessler has been quoted as saying the Uncharted 2 is the BEST single player experience he has ever played. Now, I was already hyped for this game, and it was my opinion it was the game of the show at E3 this year, but best single player experience....ever, I don't quite know how to take that. I mean, if you expect something to be the absolute best thing ever then there is only room for disappointment right? Well either way, I will be at my local gaming store at midnight to pick this up so I suppose we will just have to wait until then to see if this lives up to the hype it has been given, I surely hope it does, maybe I will play Joe Esposito's "You're the Best" while waiting in line.....probably not.

Halo ODST sales....expected?

Okay, so sales numbers on the first 24 hours of Halo ODST we released today....and it sold 2 million in the first 24 hours! That is rather ridiculous, yet somewhat expected, I mean, it is a Halo game right?

Okay, this shouldn't be considered a review of the game, just a quick overview after spending a few hours with it. Having only played the game for about 4 hours after its midnight release, I have dabbled in the new campaign the new firefight mode, and played the new multiplayer maps. From what I can tell the campaign seems somewhat familiar yet with sense of something new thrown in the mix, if you were a fan of the Halo 3 campaign or even Halo 2 then you will find yourself at home in Halo ODST. The new multiplayer maps are exactly how they sound, new multiplayer maps, and of course the Heretic map from Halo 2, anyone that played Halo 2 online will instantly feel at home playing this map, I didn't know it by name, but the minute I was dropped into the map I instantly knew where I was and what I was doing, very nostalgic. Of course I have saved the firefight mode to speak about last, because this folks is where my biggest and most note worthy complaint comes in to play. Now firefight, is a ton of fun and getting a few of my friends to party up with me and play it was tons of fun, this is actually how I spent a lot of my time tonight simply playing through firefight. This is all well and good, until one of my friends decided that it was time for some sleep, at which time, no one in my friends list was online.... Which leads me to realize that there is no matchmaking for firefight mode, really? It seems almost unreal that Bungie would neglect to add matchmaking to a game mode that absolutely begs for it. Your friends aren't always on at the same time, and if they are it isn't always possible that they are all playing the same thing, or ever want to. I just done understand how Bungie whose popularity in the gaming world is mostly due to its online play, has left the online play out of the new mode which has been so widely talked about... Anyway, from what I can tell I will be spending more time with Halo ODST and will report back after finishing the campaign. Now, time for me to go find friends....that are online at 5am.....and want to play firefight....(look of confusion develops over my face)

Robert Kotick wants the price of games raised.

So, it was announced proudly by Robert Kotick, the director of Activision, that he would like to see the price of games raised. This man sits atop a pile of money, most likely bathing in it, and he would love to see the price of his games raised, which is already happening with the price of Modern Warfare 2 raised 2 euros in the UK when it is released this fall. Having been a gamer for years and watching the steady increase of the price of games this is absurd, especially for the director of Activision the king of sequels to openly say that he wants this to happen, Modern Warfare itself is one of the highest selling games EVER, not to mention the Guitar Hero series that has sold millions of copys and having NINE, yes I said nine version of the game all produced with brand new peripherals throughout the history of the game. I say boo this man, BOO THIS MAN!

New Left 4 Dead DLC announced!

Maybe some of the ridiculous boycotting of Left 4 Dead 2 will subside after today's announcement of Crash Course. The new Left 4 Dead campaign will take place in between No Mercy and Death Toll campaigns, and will be slightly shorter than the other campaigns, but who is complaining about that, other than those people out there that act as if Valve hasn't delivered admirably with every game they have ever released....But that is beside the point, Crash Course throws a few new things in to the fray including a new respawn timer for your infected teammates and the behavior or item spawns has also been changed. For those of us playing Left 4 Dead on the pc the new campaign will be free, but for those of us also playing on the xbox we will be charged 560 Microsoft points (7 dollars). So stop crying, Valve said they would deliver and they keep their promises, I cant wait.

UK therapist wants to give WoW "addicts" therapy, in game.

Alright, most every gamer knows, that if you want to play and MMORPG, you should probably play World of Warcraft. With a community bolstering around 12 million players it’s not hard to understand that WoW is immensely popular, and for anyone that has played the game it is also not hard to understand there comes a time when the game is hard to put down, but to be profiled as an addict is stretching it a bit far, or is it. A therapist in the UK thinks that some players actually need therapeutic assistance, and said therapist wants to do so, while in game. Now, is it just me or does this seem a bit ridiculous, now I'm not comparing WoW players to crack addicts (I play WoW) but, when someone has a crack addiction, does the therapist meet with them at the crack house? No, one problem that the therapists see from this method is that, they may be a doctor in the psychological field, but when it comes to the World of Warcraft, they don’t know a damn thing about it, and because of this they are asking Blizzard to waive the monthly fee and let them work within the game, whether or not Blizzard is going to go for this is yet to be said, but I personally don’t see it happening. So, what is your opinion on the subject, do you really think that Warcraft players need therapy to put the game down, or is everyone overreacting just a little bit, my vote if for the latter, you be the judge.

Sony bans player, player sues Sony.

Anyone that has played a game online knows that some of the language can become a bit of a hazard for the "virgin" ears out there. The usual response to this is just muting the person, but it looks as if Sony's mute button has become a bit worn out. Sony has recently banned player Erik Estavillo for in game language, so Erik Estavillo has sued Sony for $55,000 claiming pain and suffering due to multiple mental problems the biggest being agoraphobia (an intense fear of crowds). This young man is claiming that by being banned from the Playstation Network it has ruined his own little social life. He is also claiming that the ban is unconstitutional, which is somewhat true considering the first amendment is freedom of speech. At a second glance though everyone playing online has signed the online users agreement, most if not everyone ignoring it and just hitting okay it clearly states that Sony has the right to ban anyone they feel if they deem it necessary. So, what do you think, does the kid have a chance or is this just another frivolous lawsuit?

Okay, so this may be old news but I just ran across it and it filled me with so much hatred and anger that I decided I needed to write about it. I must also say before leaving a short comment about the link I'm going to post is that I have absolutely no sympathy for obesity in todays society, there are millions of ways to lose weight, with people every day developing way in which to lose weight, and have fun doing it, there is just no excuse. Anyway, I ran across this today Fat Woman Pissed Off, and find it just rediculous, oh no someone made a video game about a fat girl, instead of thinking about losing weight I'm going to go get a gallon bucket of ice cream and write a letter from the comfort of my exceptionally large chair, here is a hint for all of you rediculously obese people out there that arent really trying to lose the weight and are trying to find things in society to blame your problems on, a new simple weight loss program has just been developed by me (Scott R) and it only has one simple step PUT DOWN THE FUCKING FORK! Not much has been happening lately, no new games have been played, besides WoW, I am in a guild, The Ministry of Truth, they have a podcast, it is called The Starting Zone, it is aimed towards those of us that are just starting out in Azeroth, these people are extremely helpful and have made my first few days in WoW very enjoyable, check out their site The Starting Zone. Just started playing Call of Duty 4, just trying to prepare myself for the biggest game of the year Modern Warfare 2, and I am getting extremely frustrated with the deathmatch, I didnt realize that in order to play this game online, a tent is necessary, of course I am talking about campers, EVERYWHERE. I wouldn't be surprised if there were a percentage of who killed me, most of those people would be someone camping in a far off spot with a sniper rifle just racking up kills not doing anything, very frustrating, just thought I would let of some steam here, ugh.

For the past few months I haven't really been playing a lot of multiplayer modes in games, with the exception of Left 4 Dead and Team Fortress 2 on a rare occasion. A few days ago I decided to try out the multiplayer in Killzone 2, which lead me in to a multiplayer binge of Killzone, Call of Duty 4, and to a lesser extent Halo 3. These three games are incredibly fun online, but also outrageously frustrating when played for long amounts of time. At first its all "hey this is fun" within 3 or 4 hours of constant play I'm screaming obscenities at my television and waking the neighbors at all hours of the night with said obsceneties, but its all fun in the end, if anyone is down to play Killzone 2, Call of Duty 4 (360) or Halo 3, hit me up on the consoles, psn : overrated447, xbox gamertag overrated44. Oh yeah, I play Red Faction on the PS3 also, very good multiplayer, trust me.

Listening to gaming podcasts.

I am an avid listener to podcasts, and I am always looking for new podcasts to listen to, which got me to thinking, what is it about the podcasts that I listen to habitually that makes me continually listen to them week after week, and part of it is humor, if I can find a podcast that makes me laugh out loud while I am listening to it, I immediately hit the subscribe button on itunes. So I decided to make a list of the podcasts that I thouroughly enjoy, check a few of them out and subscribe to them to help these people out, they dont have to sit down weekly to just converse about video games, but they do, and it is purely for our enjoyment.

The first podcast that I ever listened to was 4-Player Podcast, I found this podcast by looking at Left 4 Dead videos on youtube, and found a certain video called "left 4 dead brad", after watching this video a few times and looking at the 4-Player Podcast youtube page I realized that they had a podcast, at this point I had absolutely no idea what a podcast even was let alone listened to one. The first night that I started listening to the 4-player podcast I literally was up until 4am, just listening to these guys talk about video games, and found it absolutely awesome, these guys run their own website, they also use blogspot.com, and they run their own justin.tv channel where they play games nightly. To this day I check their website on a daily basis waiting for the next podcast. Now on the the other podcasts I listen to, this is running a bit long so I will just list them.

The Cagcast, Co-op (a weekly video podcast by a few guys laid off from EGM), Control Point (strictly Team Fortress 2), Destructoid Video Game Podcast, Drunken Gamers Radio(hilarious podcast), The Fanboys (a very unique podcast), Gamers With Jobs (excellent podcast), Giant Bombcast (awesome podcast), IGN - Gamescoop and Podcast Beyond (both very good), Joystiq, A Life Well Wasted (a very serious podcast hosted by Robert Ashley, very good), Player One Podcast, Rebel FM (great podcast made by a few of the guys that were laid off from EGM), Sarcastic Gamer Radio, TalkRadar (GamesRadar's podcast), The Tetris Effect (a bit adolescent, but still funny), Good Grief (a 1up.com podcast) and finally, ListenUp(another 1up.com podcast, more informative than funny, but still good). Thats it, check out a few of these podcasts if anything you're seeing interests you. Thanks for reading, take it easy.

Pre Order Assassin's Creed 2.....and get stuff!

Today it was announced that if you pre-order Assassin's Creed 2 from......none other than Gamestop (who would have guessed that...) you get a code to download Palazzo Medici. Apparently this is a download only place within Assassin's Creed 2 that offers treasure, or some other pre-order bullshit. Anyway, Palazzo Medici is only available while supplies last so if you're into the whole Gamestop domination of the world, or just want extra stuff with your game such as myself, get the your local gamestop, or the gamestop website to pre-order Assassin's Creed 2.....

New PS3 firmware update tomorrow.

Playstation 3 owners will be prompted to update their systems tomorrow, no huge upgrades, but rumor has it that there will be some changes to the friend invite system for games, hopefully this is less rumor and more fact.

Killzone 2

I downloaded the second Killzone 2 map-pack today, and after playing for close to 2 hours, no one was playing these maps, I could just change the settings to take me straight to the new maps but I would like for them to randomly come up while playing on a server, this was also a problem with the first map pack, which I have only played those maps a handful of times.... Twelve dollars well spent?

Activision gives Sony an ultimatum

Today Activision announced that if by the end of the year Sony does not drop the price of their console Activision will put serious thought toward even so much as releasing games on the console. This is a huge hit for Sony considering that Activision is one of the largest third party game developers in the world. Just imagine the amount of money that Sony would lose without the release of games such as the Call of Duty franchise, now dont start tieing the nuice yet, Modern Warfare 2 is already in production and definately will be released for the Playstion 3 this fall. Upon reading this news today, I am absolutley certain that the price of the Playstation 3 will be dropped sometime within the year, most likely towards the holiday season in an attempt to boost sales for the console. Sony is already in a bit of trouble in the console war, and if they were to start losing third party developers the future of the console is in a lot of trouble. For those of you that have not yet purchased the Playstation 3 now would be a good time to start saving money for one, and I would wait just a bit longer for the purchase, because, in a business sense, it would be an absolutely terrible position for them to be in to start losing developers, first party developers have become the bread and butter of the consoles, but losing third party support, especially from a company like activision would dig a hole too deep to dig themselves out of, a price drop is imminent.

Red Faction : Guerilla Multiplayer

Last night after getting home from work, I listened to the Drunken Gamers Radio podcast and listened to them raving about the multiplayer aspect of Red Faction Guerilla, I was intrigued. I started playing and at the beginning I didnt quite know if I was enjoying myself or not. 3 hours later I realized how much time had passed and I was still playing Red Faction multiplayer, needless to say, I really do enjoy this aspect of the game. Even though it does take a little bit of getting used to, this is no Gears of War online, which I can't stand, mostly because I am terrible at it. This is fun, and the destruction of buildings adds to the deathmatch style of gameplay, is someone camping inside of a building, take the wall out etc... And alot of the mission based modes are alot of fun, mostly based on destruction, and of course capture the flag and things of the sort. Check out the multiplayer, its alot of fun, I am currently playing this on the PS3 and you can come destroy building with me if you would like to, PSN handle : overrated447.

Team Fortress 2

New Microsoft Console?

Rumors have been flying for the past few days that Project Natal isnt just an add on for the Xbox 360, but actually the first step towards Microsoft's new console. Details are a bit lacking but from what sources are saying, if a new console is released with Project Natal the actual motion capture camera will also work with the good ol' xbox 360 that we have all sent back to Microsoft due to a red-ring. Sorry, got a bit off track there. If Microsoft does release a new console it is expected to be revealed at GDC next year, we'll just have to wait and see.

The Agency

The Agency is an MMO of which we have never seen before, we all know about the fantasy genre of the MMO , World of Warcraft, Warhammer, Everquest etc.... But this is a more modern take on the MMO genre with a spy background with a more modern setting, you start out with two faction, the Unite and the paraGON. Within your starting factions you begin with missions gain experience and work your way to making your own spy agency. As a person that made an attempt at getting in to the whole "World of Warcraft" thing and just could not dedicate the amount of time to a game that just couldnt keep my attention for more than an hour or two I am fairly excited about this game, and who doesnt want to be a spy? The Agency isnt set for release until 2010 so we have the entire rest of the year to wait anxiously for more details and hype until the actual release. Who else loves the waiting game?

With the release of Prototype this tuesday I have been asking myself for the past 2 days, should I buy this game or not. The main reason behind thinking about my purchase isnt whether or not it will be worth my hard earned money, but rather, do I have the time to sit down and play this game considering that, in the past 2 weeks, I have also purchased 2 other open world games. As you might have read before, I did buy and finish inFAMOUS the day of its release, and that isnt saying that I'm not still playing it, I have started a second game and am currently playing through as an evil character. Now the other open world game which I have not finished, and the game most of my gaming time is going in to is Red Faction Guerilla. Now back to my original point, do I really have time for yet another open world game at this time? I dont really know, I am usually quite strict with myself to get games on release day, a bit of an obsessive compulsive thing with me, but still, I dont know if I will be picking this up day one. Another though be it less important factor into my decision of a purchase is that, I have yet to see any reviews go up for Prototype, from the gameplay trailers and what not the game looks impressive, but I usually like to have some idea of what I'm getting myself into when buying a game full price the day it is released. This has saved me some money in the past (*cough* Star Wars the Force Unleashed). I supposed I will make my decision after leaving class on tuesday morning, will report back once my mind has been made up.

God of War 3, too violent?

So this video hit the web a few days after e3 and alot of people are now saying that the violence is a bit too much. Now this is just my opinion but isnt this what the next generation of gaming, we have movies out such as Hostile and pretty much any over the top movie's involving rape, the murder of children, and things that are much more gruesome than the video above, what are your thoughts?

Red Faction : Guerilla

I dont know if anyone played the old Red Faction Games on the PS2, I know I did when I was much younger, and the main draw to these games was the destructable enviroments. Once again destruction becomes a huge part of the game but a bit different, in the latest Red Faction installment it is absolutely impossible to break the ground (you could in the first two Red Faction games), but any building you see is completely destructable and not just shoot a rocket and crumble destructable. You have to be somewhat intelligent in order to bring a building to the ground, take out two tower posts and the tower will just lean to one side, or blow out two walls of a building and it will still stand. The entire Red Faction Guerilla game is based on the destruction of the environment, by taking out building you pick up the scraps that are left behind which on mars is apparently a kind of currency. I have played about 3 hours of this game and so far I am thoroughly enjoying it. Some would think that blowing up buildings regularly would get old after a while, but it doesnt, every structure is different, and the ways in which you take them out change regularly with the introduction of new weapons after the completion of missions. This game is extremely fun, and the multi-player aspect of it is a ton of fun, you can play deathmatch or mission based multi-player mostly based on the destruction of the other team's buildings, its alot of fun. Anyone that enjoys blowing things up, which most gamers do, should pick this game up, or at the very least rent it and see how you like, either way, you should play this game, the advancement of destructable technology is really awe inspiring. Check this game out, you won't be disappointed.

Final Fantasy VII on PSN

Alright, this isnt exactly exciting news but it is for me. Final Fantasy VII was released on the PSN after the announcement at Sony's press conference at e3 today, and this is incredibly exciting. Final Fantasy VII was the video game that got me in to gaming, this was the first game that actually brought up feelings within me that I had never imagined a video game could. I bought it the minute it was placed on the PS Store today, and the minute I started a new game the feeling of nastalgia was immense. This is absolutely my favorite game of all time, and yes some people might say that it is overrated (get it) I still love it. I will say, if ANYONE has not played this game, get it and buy it, its only $9.99 on the PSN and it is an absolute masterpiece, pick this game up. Ill talk more of e3 tomorrow, have to go play the Uncharted 2 beta here in about 20 minutes.

E3 began today, and I am not going to write much about it simply because during E3 there is just too much exciting news and I could write a 10 page paper on just the happenings of day 1. So I am just going to tell you the couple of things that I found exciting during the Microsoft presentation today. One being the facebook/twitter implementation in to the xbox, this is an extremely smart move on Microsofts part, millions of people use both of these networking tools and bringing them to the xbox will be nothing but helpful to Microsoft, it isnt a system seller, but it will make things a bit more convenient for gamers to keep up with their social networking. Another huge announcement today was Metal Gear Solid coming to the xbox, Metal Gear was one of the biggest games that the Playstation 3 had over the xbox and now it is on both consoles. If anyone remembers correctly Microsoft had similar news at last years E3 with Square Enix and Final Fantasy. I found it a bit odd that there wasnt much said about this. Kojima went on stage, told us of the announcement, and finally, walked off of the stage, nothing more was said. This is most likely due to the fact that the new Metal Gear will not be an xbox exclusive. Being an owner of both consoles I have to say, when the game is released, I will be purchasing it for the Playstation 3. Thats about all I have for today, I'm not going to get in to the EA conference neither will I the Ubisoft conference (which I am watching while reading this). I will be back tomorrow to put forth my opinions on the Nintendo/Playstation 3 conferences. Enjoy the rest of E3

Late To the Game

2 months ago I became the proud new owner of the Playstation 3 Console, my first game purchase for the system was Valkyria Chronicles, my second being Metal Gear Solid 4. Tonight at 3am I completed Metal Gear Solid 4, and must I say, MGS4 has jumped its way in to my top 5 favorite games of all time. I havent had so much feeling for a cast of characters in a video game since my first play-through of Final Fantasy VII in 1997. I am also somewhat positive that I have never had such a wide spectrum of feelings during a game as I did with MGS4. Part of the reasoning toward my positive view of this game is the constant fan service provided to anyone that has played any of the Metal Gear games before, whether it's a flashback or simply talking about an event in the past if you have played a Metal Gear game there is something in this game that will make you grin with a vast feeling of nastalgia during this excellent experience. So, if any of you Playstation 3 owners out there have for some reason not found your way through this game, go play it, there isnt a doubt in my mind that you will never regret spending money on this title. Hopefully Kojima will announce a Metal Gear Solid 5 during E3 this week, a man can dream can't he?

inFAMOUS

On May 26th I awoke at my house feeling rather excited about the purchase I would make within the next hour, after having a cup of coffee I got in my car and drove to my local Gamestop, being the only customer in the store I quickly went to the front desk and requested my reserved copy of inFAMOUS. After a quick chat with the sales associate and of course making sure that the beta code for Uncharted 2 was in my possession I returned home at 12pm. At 4am I found myself watching the ending credits for a game that had held my attention for the last 16 hours (only taking breaks for cigarettes and meals). At this point I decided that it was time for sleep. Waking up the next day I found myself once again playing inFAMOUS, but this time as an evil character (my first character was good). I am still playing this game and thoroughly enjoying myself. I would suggest to any Playstation 3 owner to get and play this game, it is quite possibly the most fun I have had with an open world game since grand theft auto on the playstation 2. I can literally, as I have just stated, lose hours of time within this game world, and I have no regret for doing so. So, why are you still reading, GO PLAY INFAMOUS.
